IT Network File Configuration Standards

Our network file configuration is as follows:

  • MyWork (mapped to the U-drive)
  • GroupWork (mapped to the S-drive)
    • <dept abbreviation>_files
    • <dept abbreviation>_<purpose>
      • Note: use this format for specialized shares (formerly known as “private” or “ad-hoc”) with limited access permissions (subset of full department)
      • Note: “purpose” should be a brief meaningful indication of the nature of this share; use lower case with no embedded blanks (use underscore as necessary as a separator)
        • For example, IT_searches or IT_budgets
    •  GC_<purpose>
      • Note: use this format for specialized shares that cross department boundaries
      • Note: “purpose” should be a brief meaningful indication of the nature of this share; use lower case with no embedded blanks (use underscore as necessary as a separator)
        • For example, GC_middlestates or GC_print_dropbox
    • <dept abbreviation>_scans
    •  Student_faxes
    • Course_<username>_<course prefix & number> 
      • Note: use this format for faculty that request a location for sharing files (typically course materials) with students; use lower case with no embedded blanks (use underscore as necessary as a separator)
      • Note: first option is BlackBoard; second option is WFS; third option is file share
  • ArchiveSpaces (mapped to the T-drive)
    • MyArchive (for individual archives, to be implemented by request)
      •  <username>_archive
    • GroupArchive (for departmental archives, to be by request)
      •  <dept abbreviation>_archive
