IT Network-based Backups

We utilize the following backup strategies:
• Daily, retained for 28 days
• Weekly, retained for 16 weeks
• Monthly, retained for 4 months
• Multiple-per-day, designated “application backups”

For each application an appropriate backup strategy is selected from the list above; then for each server a matrix is tabulated identifying the backup scheme(s) in place based on the application(s) and other contents of that server.

Multiple-backups-per-day are designated as “application backups”. Such backups are often executed using application-specific tools. An application backup process is done to an onsite hard drive which in turn is backed up via a daily backup; the next day the application backup process then overwrites the process from the previous day.

It is our intention to provide “self-restore” functionality to end-users whenever possible (for example, for Exchange, WFS, Windows file stores).

We utilize a professional service to store backup tapes off-site in a secured facility; courier service is scheduled weekly. Onsite backups are kept in a secured Graduate Center facility.
