The Graduate Center of the City University of New York (CUNY) is a vibrant intellectual and cultural center in the heart of Manhattan. The Graduate Center is a national model for public doctoral education and it is internationally recognized for its advanced studies. It offers over thirty doctoral programs in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, as well as a number of health sciences doctorates and master's programs.

The Ph.D. and M.A. Program in Comparative Literature has a total of 130 students and 16 faculty members. Approximately 9 courses are offered each semester, with students taking courses at NYU and Columbia via a consortium arrangement. Due to the academic structure of the Program, there is a very strong interface with the French, English, Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian, and Classics Programs, as well as other programs having interdisciplinary cross-field sub-specializations such as Theater, Music, Film, Art History, Women's Studies, and Cultural Studies.

Reporting to the Executive Officer (EO) and working with the Deputy Executive Officer (DEO) of the Ph.D. and M.A. Program in Comparative Literature, the Assistant Program Officer (APO) will perform tasks that include but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as the program coordinator and primary resource person for the Program in Comparative Literature.
- Provide resources for applicants, students and faculty regarding requirements and procedures of the Ph.D. and M.A. Program in Comparative Literature. These include routine correspondence as well as processing all applications for scholarships and fellowships.
- Coordinate program operations including admissions and registrations activities, budget allocations, correspondence, records and files, committee meetings, class meetings, and special events (including arranging room reservations for all events); order equipment and supplies.
- Serve as program assistant for the Italian Specialization in Comparative Literature.
- Assist in reviewing student progress in fulfilling requirements for the degree including major program examinations, advancement to candidacy, and time limits for completion of the Ph.D. and M.A. degrees.
- Collect and maintain statistical data on all phases of program activities, such as admissions, leave of absence, advancement to candidacy, withdrawals, courses and instructors by semester, number of students at various levels, faculty lists, faculty research interests, and colloquia.
- Prepare periodic reports for various offices of the Graduate Center, including Admissions and Recruitment, Financial Aid, Placement, and Registrar.
- Maintain all faculty files including the processing of paperwork for appointment of new faculty and collecting updated CVs.
- Distribute exams and prospectuses to designated readers.
- Maintain and updates listserv for faculty, students, and standing committees.
- Coordinate all election processes for the program.
- Assist in planning, coordinating, and administering all workshop, conferences, colloquia, and speakers' programs.
- Assist the DEO in preparation of scheduling of language examinations and First Examinations.
- Maintain budget records of all expenses incurred by the program, including postage, supplies, telephone, and honoraria for lecturers.
- Assist in enrollment, correspondence, publicity, events, and payments for the Writers' Institute.
- Assist in enrollment and maintenance of the Critical Theory Certificate.
- Coordinate with webmaster on items to be added or removed from Program's website.
- May supervise support staff.

General Duties
-
Provides basic operational and analytical support related to a College's specialized academic program.
- Supports the directors and managers with orientation preparation, student advisement regarding program requirements, and providing basic information about financial aid and registration
- Manages office records including faculty files; prepares reports and surveys; collects and maintains statistical data on program activities
- Serves as liaison to various College offices to provide service delivery and appropriate referrals to students
- Collects and reviews syllabi to ensure compliance with standards
- Serves as resource person for students and faculty regarding program policies and procedures
- May supervise office operations and/or monitor department budget
- Performs related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
-
Bachelor's Degree required.

Other Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in humanities preferred
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a higher educational setting strongly preferred
- Minimum computer skills: use of Microsoft office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint); use of other graphic programs and editor programs preferred
- Excellent organizational ability, flexibility, accuracy with attention to details, and the ability to prioritize highly desired
- Good judgment, initiative, and the ability to deal effectively with faculty, students, and staff members preferred
- Excellent written and oral skills strongly preferred
