CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
This position will provide strategic leadership, direction, and support for all activities related to research
initiatives and activities in the SPH. The CUNY SPH is a consortial school, accredited by the Council on
Education for Public Health, which includes the public health programs at Brooklyn, Hunter and Lehman
Colleges and the Graduate School and University Center. We offer a range of innovative bachelor's,
master's and doctoral degree programs, with a focus on urban health.
In collaboration with the Dean, this individual will develop and implement strategies to promote a vibrant
research culture, which advances research links and engagement within the faculty in collaboration with
the colleges and discipline directors. The overarching responsibility is to expand the research portfolio
of the SPH. The Associate Dean will have the following responsibilities:
- Develop, implement and monitor the CUNY SPH's strategic plan, as it relates to research
and research infrastructure
- Provide strategic guidance in identifying and communicating opportunities for funding.
- Provide leadership to the research staff across the School and supporting mentorship in
research for junior faculty within the SPH
- Develop internal grant and pre-review mechanisms to ensure the strongest possible
proposals are submitted for review
- Negotiate and ensure adequacy of research facilities
- Work collaboratively with the School doctoral programs, including identifying opportunities
for collaboration across the campus and with other campuses
- Promote engagement in interdisciplinary research across the faculty and externally with
other individuals, organizations, and relevant stakeholders
- Explore opportunities for involving MPH and doctoral students in ongoing research,
including graduate research assistantships
- Participate in accreditation activities for the School, especially those relating to research
- Explore possibilities of creating certificates in public health research that will be
disseminated by distance learning
- Connect with the community to involve them in the research process
- Develop and implement strategies to promote dissemination of SPH research at local,
University and national conferences and meetings
- Identify and support partnerships with both internal and external organizations in seeking
funding opportunities
- Work collaboratively with other SPH leadership, including the SPH Research Committee,
to establish and maintain national and international recognition as a leader in research
and knowledge transfer
- Assess the school's research activities, processes and infrastructure and implement
improvements, as needed
- Supervise administrative and research staff
- Assist the Dean with other duties as assigned

GENERAL DUTIES
This position performs high-level executive academic functions.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of
a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below.
 
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate should have most of the following:
- Doctoral Degree and twenty years of broad research experience in public health.
- Scholarly accomplishments, commensurate with a faculty appointment at the rank of
Associate or Full Professor
- Experience and familiarity with Federal government funding mechanisms
- Successful record of scholarship, including external funding and publication in peer-reviewed
journals
- Strong evidence of leadership and interdisciplinary collaboration
- Superior written and oral communication ability as well as diplomatic skills
- Experience in organizational and/or program assessment and evaluation
- Demonstrated experience in leading and performing in a dynamic academic environment
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative professional relations with all segments of
the institutional community, external agencies and the public
