Linguistics

The M.A./Ph.D. Program in Linguistics is designed to provide the student with a sound training in a wide variety of language-related areas, leading to a career in teaching and scientific research. Building on core offerings in current grammatical theory, the student may elect to specialize in either theoretical, experimental, or applied areas. The program maintains laboratories for research in Second Language Acquisition and Psycholinguistics. The program also offers, at the M.A. level, a degree in general linguistics, and a concentration in Computational Linguistics.

Specializations

The Program offers specializations in both First and Second Language Acquisition, and provides students with explicit preparation for careers in academic programs designed for language educators. Sentence processing, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, and sociolinguistics—including Spanish in New York City and other topics in the linguistic realities of urban centers—are among the Program’s particular strengths. The offerings in Computational Linguistics include machine translation, human-machine communication, and other areas where linguistics and computer science overlap. Many of the above specializations involve areas of cognitive science, and other interdisciplinary approaches, which are encouraged.
