TITLE: Soul Searching: The modern science of intimately personal communication
ABSTRACT: We humans routinely learn things about others without any messages being intentionally sent or consciously received. This leaves us with the impression that some sort of communication has occurred without anyone the wiser. For two thousand years scholars have tried to trace the inner qualities of others from external features, occasionally with amusing results, but modern science is now explaining how this happens. Carefully controlled experiments indicate that in fractions of a second people learn an amazing amount of information about others from unrecognized sources. Since the parties are often close enough to talk, this may leave them with a false impression of the true nature and efficiency of language.
