The Showdown Over NYC School Control: David Bloomfield

NYC school controversyProfessor David Bloomfield (GC/Brooklyn, Urban Education) has been weighing in on the failure of the New York State Legislature to resolve the issue of mayoral control of New York City schools.

This past week, The Associated Press, Fox 5 News (New York), and the New York Daily News, among other outlets, featured him in their coverage of the issue.

Bloomfield, a former counsel to the school board, believes that lawmakers are posturing and have no real interest in letting mayoral control lapse.

“I continue with my ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ perspective,” he says in The Associated Press story, which was picked up by The Wall Street Journal.

“Nobody wants to see the old community school board system go back into place so they’re going to tread water until the Legislature renews mayoral control,” he comments on Fox 5 News.

Based on prior experience, Bloomfield is predicting that legislators will restore Mayor Bill de Blasio’s control of city schools.
