- Student Honor: Music. Cynthia Lee Wong Selected as "New Voices" Composer
Cynthia Lee Wong, a Ph.D. student in composition, was selected to participate in “New Voices,” an innovative collaborative project for emerging composers launched in 2012.
The panel of judges included conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and American composers John Adams, Steven Mackey, and Mason Bates. The year-long program provides one composer of the Americas the experience of the orchestral commissioning process. The three partners in “New Voices”— Boosey & Hawkes, the largest specialist classical music publishing company in the world, the New World Symphony (NWS), and the San Francisco Symphony (SFS)—will guide Wong through the process of being commissioned, composing, and having her new works performed, while providing resources and support from the publishing as well as the presenting sides.
The NWS has already scheduled performances of Wong’s commissioned chamber work (Sunday, November 3, 2013) and symphony (Saturday, April 26, 2014). Both performances will take place at the New World Center in Miami Beach. The SFS performance dates have yet to be announced.
Wong, who has already enjoyed major international success, has studied with doctoral faculty members David Olan and David Del Tredici. “They are both fabulous!” she said, adding, “I look forward to a fantastically busy and creative year ahead.”
