Interim Provost Louise Lennihan has announced the appointment of Professor David Olan as the Graduate Center’s acting associate provost and dean for the humanities and social sciences, effective July 1, 2013.
Olan joined the Department of Music at Baruch College in 1979 and was department chair from 1984 to 1993. He joined the Graduate Center’s doctoral faculty in 1984 and has served as the executive officer of the Ph.D. Program in Music since 2001. He has been a member of various Graduate Center committees, including the Academic Review Committee.
Olan received his undergraduate degree in sociology from Columbia University, master’s degrees in sociology and music from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and a doctorate in music composition from Columbia. He has composed orchestral, chamber, vocal, and electronic music, which has been performed in the United States, Europe, and Japan. Among his numerous awards are a Guggenheim Fellowship and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts. He has also held numerous residencies at the MacDowell Colony and received a commission from the Serge Koussevitzky Foundation in the Library of Congress.
