New Director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies

Interim President Chase Robinson has announced that John Torpey, executive officer of sociology and professor of sociology and history, has been named the new director of the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies (RBIIS). Torpey will assume the role in Spring 2014, offering RBIIS his expertise in international and comparative history and affairs.

Torpey will be stepping into the role as Thomas G. Weiss, who served as director of RBIIS for the past 12 years, has decided to devote his time to full-time teaching and scholarship. As director, Weiss increased the public visibility and research profile of the institute while providing exemplary leadership and vision. Interim President Chase Robinson said of Weiss, “We are all immensely grateful for his extraordinary contributions and his service to the Graduate Center.”
