This volume of previously uncollected writings by Daniel Gerould from Comparative Literature, Modern Drama, PAJ, TDR, SEEP, yale/theater, and other journals includes essays about Polish, Russian, and French theatre on such topics as melodrama; historical and medical simulations; Auguste Villiers de L’Isle-Adam; erotic comédie rosse at the Grand Guignol; French puppet theatre; Polish and Russian Symbolists; Witkacy’s doubles; Jerzy Grotowski and Tadeusz Kantor; Slawomir Mrozek and Tadeusz Rozewicz; and the dramatic treatment of Battleship Potemkin and Fortinbras. In addition, Gerould’s translations of four plays are included: Andrzej Bursa’s Count Cagliostro’s Animals; Henry Monnier’s The Student and the Tart; and Oscar Méténier’s Little Bugger and Meat-Ticket. Distinguished Professor Gerould, who holds the Lucille Lortel Chair in Theatre, serves on the doctoral faculty in comparative literature, theatre, and the Renaissance studies certificate program.
