GENDER AND SEXUALITY SEMINAR SERIES
The lunchtime seminar sponsored by the Center for the Study of Women and Society in Spring 2013 focuses on the body and embodiment. The seminar aims to address a broad range of topics, including the sexed and gendered body in medicine, technology, neuroscience, culture, media and law. The seminar welcomes all members of the CUNY community from all disciplines. The seminar is co-sponsored by the PhD program in Sociology, CLAGS, and the PhD program in Psychology.

Notes on a Queer Brain: Can there be a Critical Research on Sex/Gender in Neuroscience?
Anelis Kaiser is associate researcher at the Center for Cognitive Science at the University of Freiburg, Germany. Dr. Kaiser recently co-edited a special issue of the journal Neuroethics on gender and brain science. She is co-founder (with Isabelle Dussauge) of the interdisciplinary network NeuroGenderings, which brings together experts from the brain sciences, the humanities and science studies (STS) to critically study the sexed brain. She has published on sex and gender as constructed categories in science as well as on the topics of multilingualism and language processing in the brain. Co-sponsored with the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies.

Cartographies and Cartouches: A Geographical Imagination of Accumulation and Dispossession
Cindi Katz is Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at The Graduate Center. Her book Growing up Global: Economic Restructuring and Children's Everyday Lives received the 2004 Meridian Award for outstanding scholarly work in geography from the Association of American Geographers. In 2003-4 she was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, and last year was the Diane Middlebrook and Carl Djerassi Visiting Professor of Gender Studies at University of Cambridge. Her current work addresses the cultural politics of contemporary U.S. childhood as spectacle.

‘Our version of consciousness raising groups’: Gender, Race and the Political Economy of Feminist Blogging
Jessie Daniels is Professor of Urban Public Health at The Graduate Center and Hunter College /CUNY. Professor Daniels will discuss how the emergence of digital media, particularly blogs, represents a new mode of civic participation – one that holds the potential to destabilize old hierarchies, but can also reinscribe hegemonic discourses of gender and race. Professor Daniels is author of White Lies (1997) and Cyber Racism (2009). Her book Google Bombs, Astroturf and cloaked sites, which examines propaganda in the digital era, is forthcoming from Routledge. She blogs with Joe Faegin at RacismReview and is a lead researcher on the Social Justice Sexuality Project.

The Brain, Truth and Underwear: The Clinical Management of Gender in Children
Sahar Sadjadi is a Visiting Assistant Professor and Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow, Committee for Interdisciplinary Science Studies, Graduate Center. Dr. Sadjadi is an anthropologist and medical doctor whose research lies at the intersection of science and technology, gender and sexuality and childhood studies. She studied medicine at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, worked as an emergency room physician, and received her PhD in medical anthropology at Columbia University. Her work has been funded by the Wenner-Gren Foundation and the National Science Foundation.
