Dans son livre La République des lettres, publié en 1999, Pascale Casanova repense la notion de canon littéraire en faisant intervenir les notions de « centre » et de « marge ». La notion de marge prend un sens différent selon que l’on évoque un espace géographique ou l’espace littéraire. Dans un texte, la marge sert à reléguer ce qui n’est pas central au texte, mais cet espace marginal peut toutefois éclairer le texte ou fournir au lecteur des informations cruciales. La marge renvoie bien souvent à une mise à l’écart, à une relégation. Dans des domaines aussi divers que la sociologie, l’urbanisme, la théorie littéraire, la marge se retrouve parfois au centre des discussions et notamment dans le cadre du poststructuralisme et de la déconstruction : on peut à cet égard prendre comme exemple l’essor des études postcoloniales ou des études basées sur la question du genre. La marge évoque également la transgression ou tout du moins la possibilité d’une transgression vers le centre ou ailleurs. Comment la marge peut-elle donc contaminer ou tout du moins pénétrer le centre ?
