The Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Program currently operates via a consortium arrangement among the Graduate Center of CUNY (the degree-granting institution) and the College of Staten Island and Hunter College campus programs.   A transition has begun whereby the College of Staten Island and Hunter College will each eventually assume degree-granting authority.   DPT students currently enrolled through the Graduate Center will continue to follow Graduate Center policies, procedures, and the DPT Curriculum as outlined when they were admitted.

In July 2012 the Board of Regents of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) granted approval for Hunter College to grant the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree; this became effective for students enrolled in the Class of 2016 (beginning June 2013).   In March 2013 the Board of Regents of the NYSED granted approval for the College of Staten Island to grant the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree for students applying for admission to the Class of 2017 (beginning August 2014). 

TO APPLY FOR THE DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY PROGRAM AT THE COLLEGE OF STATEN ISLAND FOR AUGUST 2014:  the application will be avaiable on-line at the College of Staten Island Graduate Admissions Office at http://www.csi.cuny.edu/admissions/grad/ on or about June 1, 2013.  The deadline for submitting your application online is November 1, 2013.  If you have any questions regarding your application for the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at the College of Staten Island please contact the Department of Physical Therapy at deborah.mcnally@csi.cuny.edu.

PLEASE NOTE: THE PRE-REQUISITE COURSES, GRE REQUIREMENT, CPR REQUIREMENT, AND CLINICAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS HAVE NOT CHANGED FOR APPLICATION TO THE DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY, REGARDLESS OF THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS. 

Overview

The Graduate Center (GC), Hunter College, and the College of Staten Island offer jointly a clinical doctoral program in physical therapy leading to the DPT degree (The GC will award the degree). This Doctorate of Physical Therapy curriculum is in support of the Vision 2020 of the American Physical Therapy Association, that all physical therapists will be doctorally credentialed. The curriculum exceeds the guidelines established by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). Graduates will be eligible for the National Physical Therapy Examination in New York and other States.

Accreditation Status

Hunter College and the College of Staten Island DPT Programs are both independently accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Program Goals

The DPT program prepares students to become clinician-scientists who can competently apply research to clinical practice, perform all aspects of physical therapy (PT) practice, and perform clinical research. It will prepare graduates to examine, evaluate, diagnose, and intervene in the management of impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities of the cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and integumentary systems. The program meets changing national standards as well as community needs for physical therapists working in a multitude of settings.
