Hearing Science Lab
Hearing Science Laboratory
Lab Meetings: Wednesdays 12pm - 1:00pm (weekly)
Location: rm. 7402 (OAE) & 7496 (Psychoacoustics)
Mission Statement
Research in this laboratory attempts to improve our understanding of the role of the cochlea (inner ear). Otoacoustic emissions (sounds generated by the cochlea) are used as a noninvasive tool for the investigation of cochlear mechanics. This research is combined with psychoacoustic research to better understand the perceptual consequences of cochlear non-linearity and distortion. The laboratory is fully equipped to synthesize, record and analyze acoustic stimuli. The experimental research is conducted along with the development of computer simulations of cochlear mechanics.
Current Research
Research in this lab includes:
-
Development of efficient procedures to measure Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) and Stimulus Frequency Otoacoustic Emissions (SFOAE).
-
Evaluating the effect of primary level on the different DPOAE components (DPOAE are made up of components coming from different areas of the cochlea.
-
Efferent modulation of otoacoustic emission amplitude and phase.
-
Investigating the role of the cochlea in tinnitus.
-
Determining the role of cochlear distortion on our perception of harmonic and inharmonic stimuli.
