The Ph.D. Program in Art History began in 1971, with the goal of producing scholars, teachers, museum personnel, art critics, and other professionals specializing in the history of modern and contemporary art and architecture, both European and American, from 1780 to the present, as well as art criticism and theory, while providing students with a general background in the history of art. Since the first Ph.D. was awarded in 1978, more than 330 students have completed the doctoral program.
