Work in Progress:

Ce que savaient les jeunes filles: In the wake of Les Aventures du corps masculin, in which I show how male physiology fuels plots in 19th century fiction, in this book I study the ways in which female puberty is presented in novels and short stories of the same period. I argue that trauma, ignorance, and the need to play down the incomprehensible compel girls to create bizarre stories that provide a pseudo-explanation for the changes occurring in their bodies. I further argue that this creative activity must be likened to the mythmaking studied by the anthropologists of the day.
