On Sunday, March 29, 2009, Mayotte will vote in a referendum to become a full overseas department of France. Since the independence of the Comoros Islands, the archipelago of four islands has become politically divided. With Ambassador Mahmoud Aboud and Minister Counselor Saïd Mohamed Oussein, Ambassador Mohamed Toihiri (also the first novelist of the Comoros) will lead a discussion about the 21st century geopolitical and cultural realities of the Comoros Islands: changes since independence in 1975, since 9/11, and relations between the small nation and the African Union, the Arab League, and political (and cultural) ties with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie.
