Description

Josep Pla's masterpiece, The Gray Notebook, is one of the most colorful and unusual works in modern literature. In this journal, which he viewed as an apprenticeship for his career as a writer, Pla wrote with zest and humor about his family, local characters, visits to cafés. In celebration of New York Review Books Classics' publication of the first English translation of this Catalan autobiographical masterpiece, translator Peter Bush discusses Pla's views of life and literature 1918-1919, and the challenges of re-creating such an original array of styles and moods.
