For students entering with MA degree


Year I: 

Complete two 5-credit “Introduction to Literature” courses in your major.
Pass First (written) Examination in Major Field.
Complete first-year seminar (two 5-credit courses)
Complete up to two colloquia (3 credits each)
Select Minor Field
 

Year II:

Secure permission from Executive Officer for transfer of MA credits
Complete second seminar (5 credits)
Take colloquia or independent studies as needed to complete coursework requirements.
Pass language examination
Complete requirements for Minor Field
Begin Orals preparation by selecting committee
Choose dissertation topic
 

Year III:

Pass Oral Examination in Major and Minor fields
Pass Dissertation Proposal defense
Dissertation research 
 

Year IV:

Dissertation research and writing
Dissertation defense
 


For students entering without MA degree


Year I: 

Complete two 5-credit “Introduction to Literature” courses in your major.
Pass First (written) Examination in Major Field.
Complete first-year seminar (two 5-credit courses)
Complete up to two colloquia (3 credits each)
Select Minor Field
 

Year II:

Complete 15 credits of colloquia or independent studies
Complete second seminar (5 credits)
Pass language examination.
 

Year III:

Complete third seminar (5 credits)
Complete 9 credits of colloquia or independent studies, thereby fulfilling coursework requirements
Pass additional language examinations, as required (for non-U.S. students only)
Complete requirements for Minor Field
Begin Orals preparation by selecting committee
Choose dissertation topic
 

Year IV:

Pass Oral Examination in Major and Minor fields
Pass Dissertation Proposal defense
Dissertation research 
 

Year V:

Dissertation research and writing
Dissertation defense
