TITLE: How to give someone their innocence again
One puzzle of the Dative Alternation is to model how the second object of the double object frame has the semantic status as direct object of the main verb. In the title, for instance, it is necessary to express "their innocence" as the object of "give." The present means of doing this involve smuggling the meaning of "give" into the phrase that the two objects themselves create. The title presents a paradox for this view, which the talk suggests a solution for.
This is the last colloquium of the Fall 2013 semester.
All are welcome!
