Norman Carey is a pianist and music theorist. Previously, he was a member of the music theory faculty at Eastman School of Music and the piano faculty of Western Connecticut State University. His research interests include scale theory and performance/analysis issues. His works have appeared in Music Theory Spectrum, Journal of Music Theory, Perspectives of New Music, Theory and Practice, Journal of Mathematics and Music, and Intégral. His paper, "Regions: A
Theory of Tonal Spaces in Some Medieval Treatises," co-authored with David Clampitt, was a winner of the Society of Music Theory's Emerging Scholar Award in 1999. He is one of the founding editors of the Journal of Mathematics and Music and serves on its editorial board. Carey has also served on the editorial board of Music Theory Online. Carey is now president of the Music Theory Society of New York State. Active as a performer as well, Carey's Carnegie Recital Hall debut was hailed by John Rockwell in the New York Times as "really delightful and very satisfying." In recent years, Carey helped to form the Canandaigua Lake Chamber Music Festival.
