Admissions

Admission to programs in Philosophy is administered through the Graduate Center's Office of Admission. Please visit their website to apply online and for the Graduate Center's general admission criteria and procedures. The following is additional information applying to philosophy applicants. The application deadline for both the M.A. and Ph.D. Programs is January 15; there is no spring admission.

In addition to meeting the general university requirements for admission, a student's undergraduate preparation should ordinarily include at least 18 credits for approved courses in philosophy for admission to the Ph.D. Program, at least 15 for admission to the M.A., and at least 9 for admission to M.A. Specialization in Ethics and Society. The Committee on Admissions may modify these requirements in special cases (e.g. a strong major in a related field).

Applicants have the option to send an electronic version (.pdf, .doc or .docx) of their writing sample to Admissions@gc.cuny.edu. Each applicant receives an acknowledgement email when their application is processed and may interact with Admissions staff online if they have any question related to their application.

Financial Aid

There is no institutional financial aid available for M.A. students. All applicants to the Ph.D. program are automatically considered for Graduate Center Doctoral Fellowships.

Nonmatriculated Students

Anyone who wishes to enroll in a Philosophy Program course as a nonmatriculated student must have transcripts documenting at least three undergraduate courses in philosophy, with excellent grades. Prospective applicants who meet this requirement should email the Executive Officer two weeks before the start of classes (and no earlier) to schedule an appointment to complete the necessary forms. Registration is subject to the availability of places in requested courses and the approval of the Executive Officer. There is a $125 application fee. Nonmatriculated students may take only two courses (at the per credit rate), after which they must request entry into the program. PLEASE DO NOT BE CONCERNED ABOUT THE DEADLINE POSTED IN THE ACADEMIC CALENDAR OF THE GRADUATE CENTER. REGISTRATION FOR NON-MATRICULATED STUDENTS IN THE PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM TAKES PLACE AFTER THE DEADLINE IN THE WEEK BEFORE CLASSES BEGIN EACH TERM.
