The largest body of Dr. O'Brien's research has concerned human deductive reasoning and he is the co-developer of Mental Logic Theory with Professor Martin Braine of New York University. He chaired the Institutional Review Board for Human Research Protections at Baruch College for 13 years, was a member of the CUNY-wide Institutional Review Board for 15 years, and currently is a Prisoner Representative and an alternate member of all four CUNY-Integrated Institutional Review Boards. His current research interests are in human deductive reasoning and in cross-cultural aspects of how people make judgments concerning human research protections in America, China, and Brazil.
