SUSAN F. SEMEL is  Professor of Education and  the Chair of the Department of Leadership and Special Education at City College of New York. She received her doctorate from Teachers College, Columbia University in history and philosophy of education. She is the author of The Dalton School: The Transformation of a Progressive School (1992); coauthor of Exploring Education: An Introduction to the Foundations of Education (1994, 2001); and coeditor of International Handbook of Educational Reform (1992); "Schools of Tomorrow," Schools of Today: What Happened to Progressive Education (1999) and Founding Mothers and Others: Women Educational Leaders During the Progressive Era (2002). She received American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Awards in 1994 for The Dalton School and in 2000 for "Schools of Tomorrow," She serves on the editorial board of History of Education Quarterly. She is coeditor of the History of Schools and Schooling series at Peter Lang Publishing. Her research interests include the history of progressive education and the history of women and education.
