Crude Sights: Transparency and the Science of Oil Prognostication in Southern Arabia
This paper examines the ways that oil depletion and prognostication have been framed in The Sultanate of Oman. It traces shifts in prognostication language since 2004 when Royal Dutch Shell admitted to over-projecting oil reserves in Oman. The paper argues that at stake in such shifts are not only official and everyday understandings of the future, but also expectations of state transparency, faith in science and numbers, and the limits of the knowable.
