Description

Speaker: Lulu Song (Brooklyn College, CUNY)

Title: "Language development in cultural context"

Abstract: This talk will present both the theoretical and practical backgrounds that highlight the importance of language development for school success, and introduce two perspectives — cognitive and sociocultural — from which Professor Song has approached her research into young children's language development. Three recent studies will be highlighted to illustrate how context, culture, and experience shape children's language development, and how early language and cognitive skills portend school readiness in a multicultural context. The implications of these studies for researchers, practitioners, and parents will also be discussed.
