Annual Benefit to Honor Ambassador Felix Rohatyn

Felix Rohatyn

The Graduate Center is pleased to announce that it will honor Ambassador Felix G. Rohatyn at the Fourth Annual Foundation Dinner, to take place on the evening of October 15th in The Graduate Center's Dining Commons. Marian and Andrew Heiskell will serve as honorary chairs. Co-chairs of the event are Richard I. Beattie, chairman, executive committee, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett; Amabel B. James, chair, board of trustees, The Graduate Center Foundation; Martin Lipton, senior partner, Wachtel Lipton Rosen & Katz; Henry A. McKinnell, chairman of the board & CEO, Pfizer, Inc.; and Bernard L. Schwartz, chairman & CEO, Loral Space & Communications.

Focused on developing scholarship for an urban world, The Graduate Center generates vital intellectual capital to address the city's myriad civic, social, and cultural issues. Thus, it is particularly fitting that we should honor Felix Rohatyn-a man whose articulation and profound understanding of the critical role of sound fiscal management in maintaining the social fabric of our democracy found expression in a life of responsible activism.

In New York, he is best known for his enlightened leadership of the Municipal Assistance Corporation, which saved the city from financial ruin in the 1970s and continued to provide stabilizing oversight into the 1990s. In addition to serving as U.S. Ambassador to France from 1997 to 2000, Rohatyn has been a global ambassador for the integrity and viability of American capitalism. His leadership has extended to many other public and private roles. For many years he was managing director of the investment bank Lazard Frères & Co. LLC, and he has served as a member of the New York Stock Exchange Board of Governors and as vice chairman of Carnegie Hall. Currently, he is president of Rohatyn Associates, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and serves on the boards of a number of public companies here and in Europe.

The Graduate Center invites alumni and friends to attend this special evening, when Rohatyn will be presented with the President's Medal. As part of the evening, guests will hear an important address by Rohatyn on "New York City's Role as the Financial Capital of the World." Proceeds from the event are used to support the work of The Graduate Center. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Mary Fiore at (212) 817-7150 or e-mail MFiore@gc.cuny.edu.

New Director Leads Expanded Development Office

Peter M. Tafti
The Graduate Center has long recognized the importance of its alumni, who occupy positions of leadership throughout New York City, the nation, and the world, in such areas as research, teaching, business, technology, government, and the arts. In order to serve alumni more effectively and to foster a lifelong relationship, The Graduate Center has expanded the Office of Development and renamed it as the Development and Alumni Relations Office. To lead the efforts, Peter M. Tafti has joined the staff as director of development and alumni relations and executive director of The Graduate Center Foundation, Inc.

Tafti comes to The Graduate Center from New York City's Intrepid Museum, where he served as vice president of development since 1998. His extensive experience in higher education includes senior positions at Columbia University and George Washington University, where he organized alumni programs and secured major gifts in support of students, faculty, and campus facilities.

"I am delighted to be a part of The Graduate Center's team dedicated to serving our alumni and supporting the important work of our faculty and students. The Graduate Center has an outstanding reputation and I look forward to working closely with the many talented members of The Graduate Center community to make further gains," Tafti said.

A native of New York City, Tafti received his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School as well as his M.ED. and Ph.M. from Teachers College and Columbia's Graduate School of Arts and Science, respectively.

Tafti will manage the Campaign for The Graduate Center, which is halfway to its goal of $30 million. The Campaign seeks gifts for the creation of endowed fellowships for doctoral students, endowed chairs and Distinguished Professorships, support for academic programs, centers, and institutes, and the President's Millennial Fund. With an endowment gift payable over several years, a donor can provide a name for a fellowship, faculty chair, or a state-of-the-art space in The Graduate Center's new campus, such as the Art Gallery, Dining Commons, Conference Complex, Dissertation Reading Room, Main Lobby and Historic Vestibule, and many more. For further information about the Campaign for The Graduate Center, please contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office at (212) 817-7130 or e-mail development@gc.cuny.edu.

Gifts that Give: Charitable Gift Annuities

The Graduate Center now offers all alumni, friends, staff, faculty, and retirees a new way to benefit themselves as well as The Graduate Center, through charitable gift annuities. In case gift annuities may be new to you, here are some of the most frequently asked questions about this type of gift.

How does a gift annuity work?

In return for your contribution, to establish the annuity, The Graduate Center Foundation agrees to make fixed payments to you for life.

Who may receive payments from the annuity?

One or two successive beneficiaries may receive payments. While typically the donors name themselves, it is possible to establish an annuity to benefit others, such as a child, parent, sibling, spouse, or partner.

What will the amount of my payments be?

The annuity payments are a function of the donor's age and interest rates at the time the agreement is set.

How does a gift annuity benefit The Graduate Center?

At the end of one or both beneficiaries' lives, the remainder of the principal goes to support The Graduate Center.

Are there tax advantages with a gift annuity?

Yes. You receive a significant charitable deduction in the year of the gift. In addition, a portion of the annuity payments may be tax-free.

Can I contribute securities for a gift annuity?

Yes. Contributing highly appreciated securities, which you have held for more than twelve months offers additional tax savings. The donor pays no tax on the capital gain attributable to the charitable gift portion of the contribution. If the donor is the beneficiary, the gain attributable to the annuity payments does not need to be recognized in the year of the gift but can be prorated over life expectancy.

I don't need additional income now. Why is a gift annuity right for me?

You may want to consider a deferred annuity, with payments to you beginning at some future time. You receive the charitable deduction immediately in the year of the gift that may help offset current higher income.

For more information or to set up a charitable gift annuity please contact Larry Cowen in the Development and Alumni Relations Office at (212) 817-7132 or e-mail .

18th-Century Reading Room to Open

Charles J. Tanenbaum
A rare collection of approximately 300 volumes of eighteenth-century books and maps relating to the British colonies in America and the subsequent independence of the United States will be on loan to the Mina Rees Library. The experimental three-year loan is supported by the generosity of Charles J. Tanenbaum and Szilvia Szmuk-Tanenbaum. This fall the collection will be open to students and faculty at The Graduate Center and will be a site for classes, seminars, lectures, gatherings, and exhibits devoted to eighteenth-century subjects.

The collection is to be located in a renovated room in the concourse level of the Mina Rees Library. Display cases on the main level of the Mina Rees Library will hold manuscripts, maps, and books from the valuable collection.

Seats Now Available -- for Dedication

Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall
Harold M. Proshansky Auditorium
Dedicating a seat in the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall or Harold M. Proshansky Auditorium is a unique way to participate personally in The Graduate Center's history and future while providing vital support for The Graduate Center's most pressing needs. A seat dedication is a perfect way to honor a loved one, celebrate a birthday, or mark an anniversary. It is an unforgettable and enduring gift that can be named for the donor or a family member, colleague, friend, or company.

In honor of this generous contribution, a plaque with the name of the donor, or a dedication, will be attached permanently to the back of a seat in the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall or in the Harold M. Proshansky Auditorium. All gifts go into the President's Millennial Fund in support of The Graduate Center. Dedicating a seat for $5,000 is fully tax-deductible and payable over a period of one to five years. To reserve your seat, please contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office at (212) 817-7130 or e-mail us at develop@gc.cuny.edu.

Contributions like these help The Graduate Center reach its financial goals and play and important role in educating successive generations of doctoral students to become the scholars and experts needed by our society.
