Four Graduate Center faculty members have been elected presidents of their respective national academic associations--and all four are women.
Distinguished Professor Cynthia Fuchs Epstein--who has done pioneering work exploring women's exclusion from professions--became president of the American Sociological Association in August, to be followed in 2006 by president-elect Distinguished Professor Frances Fox Piven, a widely recognized expert on welfare, political movements, urban politics, voting, and electoral politics. In addition, Distinguished French Professor Domna Stanton, a renowned scholar of seventeenth-century and early-modern French studies, currently serves as president of the Modern Language Association.
Professor Setha Low--known for her research and writing on topics such as urban design, historic preservation, park planning, and gated communities--is president-elect of the American Anthropological Association, and will take office in 2007.
