Provost William P. Kelly assumed the presidency of The Graduate Center on July 1, 2005. From 1998 through June 2005, Kelly served as The Graduate Center's Provost and Senior Vice President, a tenure that was marked by the recruitment of a remarkable cadre of internationally renowned scholars to the school's faculty, including the appointment of approximately 30 distinguished professors. He also oversaw a threefold increase in financial support for doctoral students.

Associate Provost and Dean for Academic Affairs Linda N. Edwards has been appointed Acting Provost at The Graduate Center.
Edwards received her Ph.D. in Economics from Columbia University in 1971. From 1971 to 1999 she served as a member of the Economics faculty at Queens College, and in 1978 she joined the faculty of the Ph.D. Program in Economics at The Graduate Center, where she remains a faculty member. Edwards served as Executive Officer of the program from 1995 to 1998.

Four leading scholars have been appointed to The Graduate Center's faculty, effective in September: Dagmar Herzog, widely respected in the field of European history; John Torpey, an outstanding sociologist who has made important contributions to historical and political sociology; Katherine Verdery, considered the foremost specialist in East Central European Studies; and Catherine Wilson, noted for her work in the history of philosophy.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan spoke at The Graduate Center June 1 to celebrate both the institution's 60th anniversary and two new publications from The Graduate Center's United Nations Intellectual History Project (UNIHP), a multiyear, multinational effort to produce a history of the organization's economic and social contributions since 1945.

The Graduate Center celebrated the 90th birthday of Foundation Board Member and benefactor Albert Bildner June 2 with a program of talks and musical performance entitled "Democracy and Social Development in Brazil and Latin America."

The Student Affairs and Student Services Division has effected a reorganization involving several positions. Sharon Lerner, formerly Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Affairs, assumed the position of Director of Student Affairs in May. In her new role, Lerner will supervise the day-to-day operations of the Office of Student Affairs, overseeing student activities, student disability services, other academic support services, and legal compliance issues in the Division. The Child Care and Development Center and the Wellness Center (Health Services and Psychological Counseling and Adult Development) will report to Lerner. Elise Perram has been appointed Associate Director of Student Affairs and Director of Student Activities.
