City University Establishes A Graduate Research Grant Program For CUNY Doctoral Students

Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Selma Botman has announced a new Graduate Research Grants Program for CUNY Doctoral Students, which is an investment in graduate education designed to provide financial support for the research efforts of doctoral students. The program is a result of joint efforts on the part of doctoral students, the GC administration, and the Chancellery.

The Graduate Research Grants Program will operate through a carefully structured competition that is designed to introduce student researchers to the process of applying for grants and encouraging their participation in professional studies. The grants will support such research-related activities as data collection, compensation for human subjects, research-related software, fees for professional libraries and databases, travel necessary for research as well as funds for attending conferences at which students will present their research findings. Doctoral students in their second through seventh year are eligible to apply for individual awards of up to $1,500.

"We are excited about this new opportunity for our doctoral students", said Acting Provost Linda Edwards, " and would like to thank Stephanie Domenici, one of the Doctoral Student Council co-chairs, and other members of the DSC for their initiative, creative thinking, and hard work, all of whom were crucial in obtaining this funding, as well as University Dean for Research Gillian Small for her support and assistance."

For the first year, the deadline for submission of application to the Executive Officer in the student's doctoral program will be Tuesday, October 25, 2005. Applications will be reviewed at both the program and discipline cluster levels, with final notification to students no later than Tuesday, January 10, 2006. Funds will be available to award recipients by February 1, 2006. Students will have 12 months to complete their research projects.

Doctoral Students interested in the Graduate Research Grants Program may pick up a more complete program description plus the Guidelines for Submission from the Office of Sponsored Research, Room 8309 and the Office of Student Affairs, Room 7301. Additional program descriptions and guidelines will be available in the Doctoral Students' Council office, Room 5495.
