On Tuesday, March 18, Matthew Goldstein, Chancellor of CUNY, visited the Graduate Center to speak with faculty members and to listen to their comments and concerns. Among the participants were the Executive Officers of many Ph.D. programs.
Speaking after a brief reception in the Skylight Room, the Chancellor said he was very pleased with the Graduate Center's development, particularly its success in establishing enhanced funding packages for students and in the recruitment of distinguished faculty members. He cited President Kelly's bold vision and commitment, and commended the work he has done to improve the Graduate Center's quality and visibility.
The Chancellor also praised the outstanding scholarship produced by the faculty of the Graduate Center. "I spend a lot of time reading your books," he said. "Your extraordinary work is the fuel that helps me get my job done."

In response to a question, the Chancellor discussed the issue of health insurance for doctoral students. Currently, over half of Graduate Center students are employed by CUNY in Adjunct, Graduate Assistant, and similar positions, and an effort is underway to acquire health insurance coverage for these individuals. The Chancellor expressed his willingness to move forward on this matter. Subsequently, a paragraph was inserted into the 2008-2012 CUNY Master Plan formally stating the importance of this initiative, and indicating the University's intention to seek out and provide the necessary financial support. (The Draft Plan is posted and available for review at www.gc.cuny.edu.)
