The Graduate Center hosted a special evening honoring the fifth anniversary of the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center (MESTC) on Monday, April 7.
The Center bridges the gap between academia and the professional performing arts communities both within the United States and internationally. Through diverse programming—staged readings, theatre events, panel discussions, lectures, conferences, and a number of highly regarded publications—it connects artists, academics, students, visiting scholars, theatre-goers, and performing arts professionals. President William Kelly welcomed guests and introduced the evening's speakers.
Remarks were offered by Martin E. Segal, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Lincoln Center, who has been designated a "Living Landmark" by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. The Center was named in his honor in 2002, and he remains actively involved in its activities. Mr. Segal expressed appreciation to many for their vision and generosity, including the founding donors; Distinguished Professor Daniel Gerould, MESTC Executive Director and incumbent of the Lucille Lortel Chair in Theatre; Dr. Frank Hentschker, MESTC Director of Programs; and Jan Stenzel, MESTC Director of Administration.
Tony Award-winning scenic designer Robin Wagner, who serves on the MESTC Board of Advisors, praised the Center as "a unique and very important addition to the cultural life of our city and country."
Also among the 200 guests were Edwin Wilson, Chairman of the Center's Board of Advisors; renowned actress Blythe Danner; and members of the Graduate Center Foundation Board. Cabaret entertainer KT Sullivan sang a medley of numbers from the American musical theatre.
