Latvian President Speaks on European Union

Her Excellency Dr. Vaira Vike-Freiberga, President of the Republic of Latvia, spoke April 4 to an attentive Graduate Center audience of diplomats, academics, and media, offering an inside look at the rapidly growing European Union--to which Latvia was accepted as a full member in 2004. The talk was hosted by The Graduate Center's European Union Studies Center.

Criminal Justice, English Programs Ranked Highly
U.S. News & World Report has ranked two of The Graduate Center's doctoral programs among the top 25 in the nation in recently released new rankings of American graduate programs.
In America's Best Graduate Schools 2006, the Ph.D. program in Criminal Justice at John Jay College is ranked #11 nationally (in a tie with Florida State University and the University of Florida) among 33 total U.S. doctoral programs in criminology or criminal justice. The Ph.D. program in English is ranked 23rd, tied with New York University and the University of Indiana.
The U.S. News & World Report ratings are compiled from a combination of evaluations by department chairs and Ph.D. faculty and statistical measures.

Special Events for President Horowitz to Take Place May 19
The Graduate Center has announced a special program of speakers, a concert, and a reception in honor of President Frances Degen Horowitz, who will step down from her position in June after 14 years as President. The events will take place Thursday, May 19, and the program schedule will be as follows:
- 2 p.m., Proshansky Auditorium: Programs of speakers and classical music concert, with performances presented by the Ph.D./D.M.A. program in music.
- 3:30-5:30 p.m., Dining Commons (eighth floor): Reception.
All members of The Graduate Center community are invited to attend these special events. As seating will be limited, attendees are asked to RSVP by Monday, May 9 by calling (212) 817-7157 or emailing specialevents@gc.cuny.edu. Please indicate attendance at the concert, reception, or both.

Gloria Barlow, Executive Director of Information Resources, has been appointed Acting Assistant Vice President of Information Resources while The Graduate Center re-opens the search for a permanent Assistant Vice President. Barlow will report to Associate Provost Stephen Brier in this role, which includes general oversight of all computer and telecommunications services at The Graduate Center. She joined The Graduate Center in May of 2001; previously she served as chief information officer at the School of Visual Arts, as director of the University Technology Initiative at the New School for Social Research, and helped implement networks in the New York City Mayor's Office of Management & Budget.
Professor Glenn Burger will serve as coordinator of the Certificate Program in Medieval Studies from July 2005 through July 2008, replacing Professor Catherine McKenna in the position. Burger's research specialties include Scottish literature, Chaucer, medieval cultural studies, medieval East/West relations, and medieval women's writing.
The Citrix(R) Metaframe Presentation Server, a Student Technology Fee-funded project, is now providing remote access to academic software titles and Mina Rees Library Databases for all students as of April 4. Previously the software titles and many library databases were only available at The Graduate Center or via VPN (Virtual Private Network) connections. The Citrix(R) software must be installed on a remote computer to obtain secure remote access to the software titles and databases; detailed documentation, a training schedule, and the software are available online at http://web.gc.cuny.edu/citrix. Software titles available on the first release of Citrix(R) include SAS, SPSS, EViews, Stata, Matlab, Mathematica, WinEdt, HyperChem, SciFinder Scholar, and Mina Rees Library Resources.
