Office of Affirmative Action

Statement of Hiring and Retention of Individuals with Disabilities

The Graduate School and University Center, in compliance with Sections 503 and 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (as amended) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (as amended), does not discriminate against any employee or applicant for employment on the basis of physical or mental impairment in regard to any position for which the employee or applicant is qualified.  The Graduate Center has an affirmative action plan to employ, advance in employment, and otherwise treat qualified individuals with disabilities without discrimination based upon their physical or mental impairment in all employment practices. These include employment, upgrading, demotion or transfer, recruitment, advertising, termination, rates of pay, or other forms of compensation.  The Graduate Center agrees to comply with the rules, regulations, and relevant orders of the Secretary of Labor pursuant to hiring and retention of persons with disabilities.  The school complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

Matthew Schoengood, Vice President for Student Affairs, is designated to coordinate compliance with the access and nondiscrimination requirements of Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.  He may be consulted in confidence regarding requests for accommodations.

The Affirmative Action Officer, Edith Rivera, Office of the President, is designated to coordinate compliance with the affirmative action requirements of Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act.

It is required that all officers of administration, executive officers, office heads, faculty, and staff adhere to the requirements of Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and to the principles and requirements of The Graduate Center Affirmative Action Plan.  Employees and applicants are protected under the Act from coercion, intimidation, interference, or discrimination for filing a complaint or assisting in an investigation.

All individuals with a disability are invited to have themselves so identified. This information is voluntarily provided and is kept confidential. Refusal to provide the information will not subject any employee to any adverse treatment, and the information can be used only in connection with The Graduate Center’s affirmative action programs for individuals with a disability.
