Donald Robotham

Professor, Ph.D. Program in Anthropology

RobothamDonald Robotham earned his B.S. from the University of the West Indies (UWI) and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has done extensive research in the English-speaking Caribbean as well as among the gold miners of Ghana in West Africa. His work addresses the divisions provoked by race, ethnicity, class, alternative modernities, and immigration, and the difficulties developing countries face during a period of advanced capitalist globalization. His writings on the 1865 Morant Bay Rebellion and on Marcus Garvey and the phenomenon of "black ethnicity" in Jamaica are considered landmarks in Caribbean studies. Prior to coming to The Graduate Center, Professor Robotham taught at UWI in Kingston, Jamaica, where he also served as provost and dean of the School for Graduate Studies and Research. Also active in formulating social policy in the Caribbean, in 1995 he was appointed chair of the National Committee to Reestablish the National Youth Service by the Jamaican prime minister.
