Martin D. Ruck

Associate Professor, Ph.D. Program in Psychology/Developmental

RuckMartin Ruck earned his Ph.D. in applied cognitive science from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. Before coming to The Graduate Center, Professor Ruck taught at the University of Toronto-Mississauga. The recipient of many grants, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship in developmental psychology from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (1993 to 1995), and he was a senior researcher with the Royal Commission on Systemic Racism in the Ontario Criminal Justice System. A widely published specialist in the overall process of cognitive socialization--at the intersection of race, ethnicity, and class--in terms of children's and adolescents' thinking about human rights, educational opportunity, and social justice, he is currently working on a project funded by the National Institutes of Health that investigates how children's and adolescents' evaluations of racial exclusion, and perceptions of racial discrimination, are influenced by their social experience and school environments.
