Galen Strawson
Distinguished Professor, Ph.D. Program in Philosophy
Galen Strawson is widely regarded as a major figure in contemporary philosophy of the mind and related fields. Educated at the universities of Cambridge and Oxford and the Sorbonne, he has held teaching positions at the universities of Oxford and Reading, as well as visiting positions at New York University and Rutgers University. He is the author of three seminal books that introduced pioneering ideas and arguments in three separate areas of philosophy: free will, causation, and the philosophy of mind. The books are, respectively: Freedom and Belief; The Secret Connexion: Realism, Causation, and David Hume; and Mental Reality. In addition to his scholarly writings, Professor Strawson has addressed larger audiences through his essays and reviews in periodicals such as the Times Literary Supplement, the New York Times Book Review, and the Financial Times, and through his appearances on film, television, and radio. He is currently working on two forthcoming books on the topic of the "self."
