Ofelia García
Professor, Ph.D.
Program in Urban Education
Ofelia García, Professor of Urban Education, is
a renowned scholar in her field. Her work on language and
identity has had a significant impact on the understanding
of key issues related to bilingual education and the education
of language minorities. She has written many books and
articles on all aspects of the subject. Her most recent
book, Bilingual Education in the 21st
Century: A Global Perspective, is on press, and she is the co-author of such
books as Imagining Multilingual Schools;
Language Loyalty, Continuity and Change; and The
Multilingual Apple. García
comes to the Graduate Center from Teacher’s College
at Columbia University where she coordinated the graduate
program in bilingual education and was co-director of the
Center for Multiple Languages and Literacies. Previously,
she was dean of the School of Education at the Brooklyn
Campus of Long Island University. She holds a Ph.D. in
Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Languages and Literatures from
the Graduate Center.
