Environmental projects in the United States and Abroad
Reza Khanbilvardi, a Professor in the CUNY Graduate Center's Ph.D. Programs in Engineering (Civil) and Earth and Environmental Sciences, is also Executive Director of the International Center of Environmental Resources and Development (ICERD), School of Engineering, City College. ICERD administers continuing national and multi-national projects that attempt to solve serious environmental problems such as water, land, and air pollution, as well as the diverse communications, economic, and educational issues that surround them. For example, ICERD's engineers and scientists have already designed, built, and manufactured water purification units for selected schools and hospitals throughout the Ukraine and other former Republics of the USSR. ICERD reaches out to these communities not only by providing the devices but also through educational programs. The Center is providing similar assistance with regard to waste-related contamination in Macedonian and Iranian communities. On the national level, ICERD is heavily engaged in developing robust remote sensing techniques capable of monitoring the diverse conditions of atmospheric air quality, and coastal and inland waters. This work includes the development of schemes for improved climate and environmental observation using satellite platforms and remotely sensed data to predict changes in the earth's environment. Funding for ICERD's national and international projects comes from such organizations as USAID, NASA, NOAA, the NSF, the State of New York, and the United Nations. Dr. Khanbilvardi's research teams include CUNY doctoral faculty from, among others, the Ph.D. Programs in Engineering (Civil and Electrical), Computer Science, Earth and Environmental Sciences as well as doctoral candidates, and master's and postdoctoral students from The Graduate Center's Ph.D. programs in the sciences.
