Carbohydrate Appetite, Fat Appetite, and Obesity

Anthony Sclafani, Distinguished Professor of Psychology at The Graduate Center and Brooklyn College, directs the Feeding Behavior and Nutrition Laboratory (FBNL) at Brooklyn College. He is investigating the role of taste, nutrition, and learning in the development of food preferences, particularly for foods rich in sugar and fat. Parallel studies being performed with Dr. Karen Ackroff are examining protein appetite in animals from a learning and nutrition perspective. Dr. Ackroff is Adjunct Professor of Psychology at The Graduate Center and Brooklyn College and an associate of FBNL. In collaboration with Richard Bodnar, Professor of Psychology and Biology at The Graduate Center and Queens College, Dr. Sclafani is studying the pharmacology of learned food preferences. This work implicates brain dopamine and oploid systems in food reward and preferences. Dr. Sclafani's research program is supported by the National Institutes of Health.
