China Human Rights Leader To Speak at CUNY Graduate Center

Dr. Fang Lizhi, co-chairman of Human Rights in China, a New York-based group led by prominent exiles, will present his views as a panelist on "Society and Global Change: Facing the New Millennium," set for Thursday, April 6, from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center. The panel is one of two featured during a day-long symposium on Contemporary International Issues. The second panel, "Human Rights: Global Advances and Regional Perspectives," is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Both events are part of The Graduate Center’s "Celebrating the Center" festivities from April 3 to 7, which will offer the city free public lectures, concerts, readings, symposia, and films inaugurating The Graduate Center’s new campus in the landmark B. Altman building at 365 Fifth Avenue, between 34th and 35th Streets.

A complete schedule of the International Symposium is attached. All events are free and open to the public, but seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. For further information, call 1-212-817-8215 or e-mail continuinged@gc.cuny.edu.

Along with Dr. Fang, an astrophysicist who teaches at the University of Arizona at Tucson, panelists on the Society and Global change panel will include Enrique Iglesias, president, Inter-American Development Bank; Fang Lizhi, astrophysicist, University of Arizona at Tuscon; and Mexican author Angeles Mastretta.

The Human Rights panelists will include George Andreopoulos, assistant professor of political science, John Jay College and The Graduate Center; Audrey Chapman, director of human rights program, American Association for the Advancement of Science; Jack Donnelly, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of International Studies, University of Denver; and Nico Schrijver, professor of international law, Vrije Universiteit, Netherlands.

The Graduate Center is the doctorate-granting institution of the largest urban university in the U.S. The only consortium of its kind in the nation, it draws its faculty of more than 1,600 members mainly from the CUNY senior colleges and cultural and scientific institutions throughout New York City.

Established in 1961, the CUNY Graduate Center has grown to an enrollment of nearly 4,000 students in 31 doctoral programs and seven master's degree programs in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The Graduate Center also houses 24 research centers and institutes and administers the CUNY Baccalaureate Program.

According to a recent National Research Council report, more than a third of The Graduate Center’s rated programs rank among the nation's top 20 at public and private institutions, nearly a quarter are among the top ten when compared to publicly supported institutions alone, and more than half are among the top five programs at publicly supported institutions in the northeast.

Further information on The Graduate Center's programs and activities can be found on its Web site at: www.gc.cuny.edu.
