The Chemistry Doctoral Program at the CUNY Graduate Center consists of about 130 doctoral students completing the requirements toward their Ph.D. degree. The students comprise a very diverse multi-cultural population, including national and international students. There are seven specializations or “subdisciplines” in the program.  Over 120 faculty members from the participating CUNY campuses are involved as mentors of the students and as instructors of the doctoral courses, which are taught at the Graduate Center. Each semester there are 10-12 courses offered.
Duties and responsibilities:

Reporting to the Executive Officer (EO), the College Assistant will work with the Assistant Program Officer (APO) and the EO to assist in managing the administrative aspects of the Chemistry Doctoral Program. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assisting and advising chemistry students
  • Entering data and updating various data bases, including updating the program website
  • Keeping files for students admitted each fall;
  • Collecting and entering students grades each semester
  • Assist in managing the course evaluation process
  • Filing documents in student, faculty and other folders
  • Keeping the office calendar; Typing memos and letters
  • Answering the phone, and handling the mail and faxes; Arranging meetings
  • Maintaining and ordering supplies
  • Providing general assistance to the APO, EO and the Deputy Executive Officer as needed
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma
  • Training in secretarial skills and/or experience in secretarial and administrative office duties
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Outlook
 Preferred Qualifications: 
  • A college degree would be highly desirable
  • Expertise with maintenance of websites and website design would be advantageous
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with students, faculty and administrators are preferred

Salary Range

$12.00–$15.00 per hour (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)


20 hours per week
