Since its inception in 2003, the School of Professional Studies of the City University of New York (CUNY SPS) has launched fifteen degrees: nine bachelor's degrees open to students with 24 or more college credits who wish to complete their undergraduate studies, and six master's degrees, with more programs currently in development. CUNY SPS leads the University in developing and operating online degree programs, and trains faculty throughout CUNY in online instruction. CUNY SPS is also the home of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, which offers higher education programs for working adults and union members, and serves as a nationally-recognized center for scholarship and resources for labor, academic, and community leaders seeking a deeper understanding of labor and urban issues.

The School of Professional Studies is seeking part-time adjunct instructors to teach a personal and consumer finance course that will be delivered online to approximately 200 high school juniors and seniors throughout New York City via the New York State Higher Education Service Corporations (HESC). The course will be offered as part of a special initiative of the CUNY School of Professional Studies and College Now, which is a collaborative program of the City University of New York and the New York City Department of Education.

In the course students will learn the fundamentals of personal finance by learning about these concepts and applying them to scenarios and situations. The course will underscore how one's knowledge of personal finance is linked to personal goals and aspirations. The overall goal of the course is to develop students' financial literacy, enabling students to manage their financial resources effectively after high school. As part of the course, students will also learn more about planning for post-secondary education, and options available to pay for post-secondary education.


For appointment as adjunct lecturer, adjunct assistant professor, adjunct associate professor, or adjunct professor, a person must have those qualifications or professional achievement and training comparable to those of faculty members in the corresponding ranks of lecturer (full-time), assistant professor, associate professor, and professor appointed through the regular channels of the colleges or university.

- Adjunct Lecturer:  Must possess a baccalaureate degree and such other qualifications as may be necessary for the satisfactory performance of his/her instructional functions.

- Adjunct Assistant Professor:  Must have obtained the Ph.D. degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited university. Demonstrated satisfactory qualities of personality and character, evidence of significant success as a teacher, interest in productive scholarship or creative achievement, and willingness to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

- Adjunct Associate Professor:  Must have obtained the Ph.D. or an equivalent degree from an accredited university in addition to possessing a record of significant achievement in his/her field or profession or as a college or university administrator. There shall be evidence that his/her alertness and intellectual energy are respected outside his/her own immediate academic community. There shall be evidence of his/her continued growth and of continued effectiveness in teaching.

- Adjunct Professor:  Must have obtained the Ph.D. degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited university in addition to possessing a record of exceptional intellectual, educational, or artistic achievement and an established reputation for excellence in teaching and scholarship in his/her discipline.
Other Qualifications:
- Prior experience teaching consumer or personal finance or a related discipline, such as economics
- Demonstrated experience in providing financial counseling 
- Obtainment of the Certified Personal and Family Finance Educator (CPFFE) Credential or Certified Financial Education Instructor (CFEI) Credential a plus
- Prior experience teaching online preferred
- Prior experience as a high school teacher or working knowledge of the New York City Department of Education a plus
- Willingness and ability to work collaboratively with program staff to support the success of the program

Salary Range

Commensurate with experience, credentials, and salary history.
