Search for Provost and Senior Vice President

The Graduate Center - Office of the President

August 27, 2015

Dear Colleagues,

Dr. Louise Lennihan, who has served as Interim Provost since July of 2013, has informed me that she will be stepping down from the position at the end of the 2015–2016 academic year. I am enormously grateful to Louise for leading academic affairs with such skill, energy and dedication; and we all look forward to celebrating her service later this year.

I thus write to announce that we shall be opening an international search for our next Provost and Senior Vice President. Following earlier practice, a search committee has been assembled, which is comprised of ten members of our faculty—all distinguished scholars, drawn from across multiple disciplines—joined by two students and one administrator.

Janet Gornick, Professor of Political Science and Sociology, and Director of the Luxembourg Income Study Center, has kindly agreed to serve as chair. Janet, who has been a member of the doctoral faculty since 1996, joined the Graduate Center in 2008 from Baruch College, where she was Professor of Political Science. While at Baruch, she chaired their search for a Dean for the Weissman School of Arts and Sciences. I am indebted to her, as I am indebted to those colleagues who have agreed to serve on the search committee:

●  Distinguished Professor Sergei Artemov, Ph.D. Program in Computer Science,
    Mathematics and Philosophy
●  Distinguished Professor Cathy Davidson, Ph.D. Program in English,
and Director of The Futures Initiative
●  Hesselbach Professor Laurel Eckhardt, Executive Officer, Ph.D. Program in Biology (Hunter)
●  Distinguished Professor Joshua Freeman, Ph.D. Program in History
●  Professor Ofelia Garcia, Ph.D. Program in Urban Education and Hispanic
    and Luso-Brazilian Literatures and Languages
●  Dr. Sebastian Persico, Senior Vice President for Finance and Administration
●  Professor Donald Robotham, Ph.D. Program in Anthropology,
and Director of the Advanced Research Collaborative
●  Associate Professor Martin Ruck, Ph.D. Program in Psychology and Urban Education
●  Associate Professor Anne Stone, Ph.D. Program in Music
●  Professor Iakovos Vasiliou, Executive Officer, Ph.D. Program in Philosophy

I have also asked the Doctoral Students Council to identify two students to serve on the committee.

To ensure that we attract a large and diverse pool of highly qualified candidates, we have engaged the firm of Witt/Kieffer, which will support the work of the search committee. They will bring to the process a network of contacts and extensive experience with high-level academic searches.

During the next two weeks, we will be advertising the position extensively. Additional information will follow as the search gets underway.

Kind regards,

Chase F. Robinson Signature
