Message from President Robinson
December 22, 2016
At the end of an eventful year, I want to express my gratitude for the extraordinary creativity and vitality of the Graduate Center community. As measured by the vast research produced by our faculty and students, their inspiring teaching throughout the University, the topical issues showcased in our public programming and the administrative work behind it all, 365 Fifth Avenue is a hothouse of new thinking
Social and political convulsions serve to highlight our strengths. As I noted in my Convocation remarks, our claim to authority—to influence debate, inform policy and the like—is grounded in research, fairness and reasoned argument, which are the elements and engineering of genuine knowledge. It is a powerful defense in an age when facts can be wished away because they're incompatible with conviction.
This is why I greet 2017 with confidence. The work that we do can be difficult, but it is eased by our shared commitment to knowledge as a public good. And I couldn't be prouder to be a part of a community that serves the public so powerfully.
Best wishes for a restorative holiday season and good will in the new year.
Chase F. Robinson
