Student Learning Outcomes Assessment

The Graduate Center (GC) is committed to continuous institutional improvement, supported by an ongoing learning outcomes assessment process. Outcomes assessment activities help faculty define student success in order to shape curriculum, examinations, and professional development offerings. Assessment activities produce data which are analyzed and shared with the GC community to support institutional advancement. Assessment at the GC focuses on creating specific and measurable learning outcomes, finding meaningful evidence of student learning, and ensuring that all student assessments are purposely designed to elicit evidence that learning outcomes are being achieved.

In 2016–2017, the GC's Outcomes Assessment Committee (OAC), in partnership with the Strategic Planning Committee and the Provost, revised GC’s Institutional Learning Outcomes. This revision was the first step in a campus-wide effort to align learning outcomes with the educational mission of the GC, and to encourage a culture of evidence-based assessment at the institutional, program, and course levels.

In 2017-2018, the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness and the OAC guided programs through a campus-wide assessment audit and augmentation. The goal of this process was to align assessment at the program level with the newly revised Institutional Outcomes, and to help programs clarify the relationship between outcomes, evidence, and assessments.
