The Graduate Center's mission is to carry out advanced research and scholarship, to prepare the next generation of scholars for careers in the academy or in culture and public service, and to increase public understanding of both perennial and pressing matters of local and global significance. The people associated with the Graduate Center are thought leaders; out of the charge to nurture and grant advanced degrees from CUNY, the Graduate Center assembles an extraordinary community of almost 2000 scholars from scores of disciplines, and two dozen institutes and centers address areas of special interest and concern. The Graduate Center is literally the axis of New York's collegiate learning. This year, our 4500 graduate students will teach 7700 courses throughout CUNY to more than 200,000 undergraduates as part of their training. 

Reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, the Development Director (Individual Giving) will function as an active decision-maker in the team of professionals devoted to an aggressive fund-raising program at the Graduate Center centered on the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of prospects. The Development Director (Individual Giving) will be responsible for the broad menu of duties aimed at making the process of securing gifts from individuals more efficient, seamless, and successful.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Manages a portfolio of at least 50 annual gift donors which will include Board members, major and moderate donors and prospects, and faculty, and continues to replenish the pipeline of prospects for annual solicitation of college initiatives as well as eventual campaign prospects.
- Directs and coordinates a comprehensive gifts fundraising strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit from individuals, with relevant attention to planned giving, special events and named capital or endowment gifts now and into the future. Identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts prospects and monitors their contacts to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations.
- Working with senior administrators, faculty, staff, trustees, and volunteers as appropriate, ensures the consistent execution of strategies and programs to educate the Board, alumni, donors, and friends about giving opportunities and increases the number of these commitments to help the Graduate Center realize its fundraising goals. 
- Develops, evaluates, and assists in planning and/or directing cultivation events or programs that involve the Graduate Center President, the Foundation Board, senior faculty and administrative staff, and volunteer leaders.
- Prepares lists, reviews research profiles, and produces useful materials for internal staff meetings and the Board level Development committee(s).
- Writes or assists in drafting proposals, brochures, newsletters, pamphlets, and other materials as necessary; assists with publicity arrangements for significant gifts, programs, accomplishments, or events.
- Identifies and participates in special events and recognition and stewardship programs as appropriate; drafts acknowledgement and other correspondence as needed to enhance relationships with donors.
- Assists in and/or manages planned giving program, targeting current donors, alumni, and faculty.
- Attends evening and weekend activities as required.
 
General Duties
Directs College's fundraising strategy and administration of fund-raising programs.

- Designs, implements and monitors comprehensive resource development program

- Responsible for meeting specific goals and targets

- Develops funding strategies; assesses outcome of strategic plan

- Oversees a portfolio of annual and major gift prospects to establish and sustain ongoing relations

- Maintains relationships with donors and sponsoring organizations to cultivate and maintain funding

- Ensures reporting requirements are completed in timely and accurate manner

- Manages professional and clerical staff

- Performs related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree and eight years' related experience required
  
Other Qualifications:
A preferred candidate will have:
- Broad knowledge of the principles of fundraising and able to participate in all aspects of the gift cycle
- Track record of building donor relationships and negotiating five-, six-, or seven-figure gifts
- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Ability to work productively as a team member.
- Competency in MS Office and Raiser's Edge
