Shari Springer Berman, who codirected the Oscar-nominated American Splendor and HBO’s Cinema Verite, presents a special screening of The Extra Man, her 2010 film about coming of—and coming to terms with—age in New York. Starring Kevin Kline, Paul Dano, Katie Holmes, and John C. Reilly, based on a novel by Jonathan Ames. Berman will be interviewed by Jerry Carlson, professor of film studies at the Graduate Center and City College.
On Location: New York Films, New York Directors is a film series presenting three filmmakers who not only live in New York but use the city as a subject. Each evening includes a screening and a discussion with the director about the state of independent film production in NYC.
Shari Springer Berman, along with partner Robert Pulcini, wrote and directed American Splendor (starring Paul Giamatti), which won over 30 awards including the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the FIPRESCI Award at Cannes; it was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Their HBO film Cinema Verite (starring Diane Lane, James Gandolfini, and Tim Robbins) received nine Emmy nominations including Best Movie, Outstanding Directing, and Best Editing (for which it won). Cinema Verite also received three Golden Globe nominations and a SAG Award nomination, and won the ACE and Writer’s Guild Awards. Berman and Pulcini’s award-winning documentaries include Off the Menu: The Last Days of Chasen’s and The Young and the Dead. Their most recent film, Girl Most Likely, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival; it stars Kristen Wiig, Annette Bening, Matt Dillon, and Darren Criss.
