Jonathan Manczur will present on a topic in Pragmatics:
This Is Not Not a Thorough Examination of “Not Not” in Informal Speech
There is a phenomenon in informal speech where a speaker will use two negations for what would otherwise be a standard assertion: I am hungry vs I’m not not hungry. While “not not,” initially appears to simply be a double negation, further evaluation suggests that there is a larger pragmatic context. “Not not” can act as both a degree modifier and an instance of negative politeness. The great repository of informal writing known as Twitter will be analyzed to discover emerging patterns.
